Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning: The Legend of Dead Kel (DLC)

The legendary pirate Dead Kel and his Hanged Men have returned to haunt the seas of northern Amalur. Embark on a journey to the distant island of Gallows End with the eccentric Captain Brattigan in an adventure that will uncover a secret so great that it has incited wars and toppled kingdoms. Discover powerful new weapons and Twist of Fate Cards and use them to conquer the island’s unique inhabitants. Become the Lord of Gravehal Keep and lay claim to this once great fort that stands upon the edge of a cliff in the most expansive player housing option yet. In an extensive new story and a host of new side quests, battle treacherous new enemies and face exciting new challenges on the mysterious island of Gallows End.

Worse things have started with a night at the bar than the Legend of Dead Kel DLC forKingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.
You meet up at a pub in Rathir, assuming you’re the necessary level 10 or higher to pursue the quest. Soldiers have been shipping back and forth to Klurikon for years now but the legendary pirate Dead Kel has returned and the navy needs someone special to take care of him. Of course, since you’ve already paid $10 for this, your only possible answer is “Yes.”
I was initially entranced by Captain Brattigan, the unlikely pirate-hunter who ferries you over to the island of Gallow’s End where Dead Kel makes his undead home. Her lackadaisical incompetence is rather humorous at first, but that charm lasted all of ten minutes. Many of the other characters you meet over this 4 hour journey also make good impressions but by the end there was only one character I didn’t actively loathe. Some have noble intentions, others less so, but all come off as pathetic.
The new ambient music is evocative, striking the correct tone for a story which attempts to be equal parts mysterious and foreboding. It tells a tale of a strange new cult and its lost son; while each individual quest objective is clear, it fails to ever make sense as a cohesive narrative. Side quests abound on the rather large island but likewise fail to draw interest. My lone hope was the “largest player housing yet” promised in the marketing materials. It’s a cool house, I’ll give you that, but unlocking it boils down to 1 part fight, 10 parts fetch quest. I gave up before construction was ever finished.
I found it potentially off-putting that the game doesn’t make it clear Legend of Dead Kelrequires you to be at least level 10 until after you purchase the DLC. Unlike the zones inReckoning however, the content at least scales to your character’s level. It introduces several new enemies though most amount to re-skinned versions from the main game. I played through the entire island on Hard to keep it interesting; unfortunately, it is clear the designers can’t think of any other way to make battles challenging than to use troll-like enemies with incredibly deep health pools which lead to drawn-out battles of attrition.
